Baset Hound Walk at Kilmington

This will be a new walk for The Pack, and in a lovely area not far from Stourhead just off the A303 near Wincanton. Walk leaders will be Heather and Malcolm – plus a contribution from Elvis the swimmer. It is a lovely chalk downland walk over an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, owned and managed by the NT and private landholders.
Once a neolithic camp and Iron age hill fort.... when you reach the top you will see why....with outstanding views over the area from Shaftesbury to Glastonbury and a wonderful view of Stourhead/Alfreds Tower.

Our walk will start from the car park, uphill following the by-way. We will then access the NT countryside area with views over the Deverill valley, then downhill through two farms (Hounds on leads please) then following the contours of the land making our way uphill (yes there are a few hills) onto White Sheet Down so plenty of space for a few gallops and maybe a chase....
We then explore the fort area and burial sites, trenches and tumulus back towards the car park.

There is the Red Lion PH at the end of the lane but was closed for a re-fit, it may well be open by the time we do our walk. I will check and let you know.
We will encounter cattle and sheep... so leads at the ready...

Directions (start 10.30am)
From the south on A303 at Mere take the junction for Stourhead B3092. Follow this for approx 3 miles passing the turn for Alfreds Tower on your left, take the next Rt turn by the Red Lion PH to White Sheet, follow the single track lane for about ½ mile and the car park will be found on your right.

From A303 north leave and follow as above at the Mere junction.

From Bath/Frome area follow NT signs for Stourhead B3092 until you see Red Lion PH approx 3mls from Maiden Bradley.

The walk is approximately approx 5½ mls
