To cater for the Northern Contingent of the group this additional walk is being run by Guy & Sarah Bridge who live up there somewhere in the wastes north of the M4. Please direct any queries about this walk to them on guybridge@googlemail.com.
The venue will be Postern Hill; Marlborough. It will be a walk through open deciduous woodland mainly on made up tracks, otherwise well used pathways. It is approx ½ mile south of Marlborough on A346, on your left at the crest of the first hill south of Marlborough (or right if you're driving from the Amesbury direction). The site is the northern end of Savernake Forest. The map ref is SU195681.
10:30 start. What we are hoping to arrange is a walk of 2 - 2½ hours coming back to the car parking area for lunch and a second shorter (1½ hour) walk after lunch. (Don't forget sandwiches and bonios: Guy is quite keen on pork pies).
Meeting Point. Enter Postern Hill site and follow track to right (signposted Picnic Area). Carry on past toilet block on left. Roadway has a left spur - follow this. Look for Barbecue Site 5. We'll be there in an old filthy red Volvo estate to wave you in.
Please note: Savernake Forest is notorious for ticks. Make sure your Frontline treatment is up to date and check for ticks after the walk.
You will need to carry plenty of water as there are no natural supplies in the forest.
